Two years ago I shot my very first wedding. I can’t believe how much both my business, and myself as an artist, have grown in those two short years. Let’s back up a bit to the Fall of 2012. I just launched my Facebook business page and hosted my very first sessions – Fall Family Minis. Shortly after, Kristy contacted me about shooting her engagement pictures. I was ecstatic.
Let’s back up even more to the mid 1980s. I met Kristy when I was in preschool with her twin sister Amanda. From then on, the three of us remained friends and classmates all the way to High School graduation. After High School, I went off to college at Michigan State and eventually moved to Georgia for four years, but always kept in touch with Kristy through mutual friends and social media. (We even worked a summer in college together at the former Motown Harley Davidson dealership; which feels like a lifetime ago!!)
This brings us to the Fall of 2012. Although my business was brand new, and my dream was to one day photograph weddings exclusively, I had no idea that the opportunity would come so soon. I shot Kristy and Jared’s engagement session at Greenfield Village in Dearborn. It was my first time meeting Jared, and I knew that if he was half as kind and sweet as his beautiful fiancé, we’d be fast friends. He most definitely was. Shortly after their session, Kristy stopped by my home to pick up her engagement photos. It was then that she asked me to photograph their wedding. I remember the smile on her face and my total surprise that she would want me to capture such an important day in her life. “ME?! A brand new photographer?! I don’t even have wedding pricing! You KNOW I haven’t shot a wedding before, right?” Kristy told me that she and Jared would love if I photographed their wedding day, and that she completed trusted me to do an amazing job. I almost cried. In an industry that is so competitive, to have someone believe in you and your work with total trust and kindness is life changing. It was for me.
Since photographing Kristy and Jared’s wedding, I’ve shot dozens more, and this past winter decided to focus the majority of my business to wedding photography. I never would have made the leap so quickly, doing something I am so passionate about, without the kindness and trust of two very special people. Happy Anniversary to Kristy and Jared! I wish you a long lifetime of anniversaries together filled with love and laughter. Thank you so much for believing in me!
A huge thank you to Jackie Noles of J. Noles Photography for being my right hand man, my partner in crime, and my overall support system and awesome second photographer that day. AND for capturing this super cool candid of me in action!
OH! Did I mention one short year later I was blessed to shoot some of their precious baby boy’s first pictures?
This adorable little one is about to celebrate his first birthday! Happy Birthday Mac!
