When I became a wedding photographer back in 2012, I never could have imagined ending up here. "Here" as in having couples-turned-lifelong-friends, shooting hundreds of weddings at the most beautiful venues in Metro Detroit, and fueling my passion for travel by adventuring from coast to coast. It's such a dream and privilege to serve couples like you on a daily basis!
Every family has their holiday traditions, and for ours, cutting down our Christmas tree is one of the most treasured. This year, our adventure took us to Candy Cane Christmas Tree Farm in Oxford, MI, on the sunniest day of November. The crisp air, bright sunshine, and rows of evergreens set the perfect stage for a day filled with holiday cheer.
As a photographer, I often feel the pressure to document everything perfectly. But this year, I made a promise—both to my kids and to myself. I’d bring my camera but let go of the perfectionist mindset that tends to turn family outings into mini photo shoots. My kids, Macie, Charlie, and Jensen, and my husband Joey were thrilled with the new approach.
Instead of orchestrating picture-perfect poses, we leaned into the fun. We laughed, danced, and even broke into some impromptu Christmas caroling among the trees. Charlie, ever the curious and adventurous one, asked if she could take a turn behind the camera. Handing it over to her, I watched as she captured moments from her unique perspective. It was a beautiful reminder that sometimes the best memories are made when we’re not focused on being in control.
As we searched for the perfect tree, the day unfolded naturally. Jensen’s excitement was contagious as he darted between rows of evergreens, and Macie’s eye for detail helped us find “the one.” Joey and I shared a knowing smile as we saw our kids fully immersed in the moment, without any pressure to “perform” for the camera.
In the end, I even stepped into a few photos myself—a rarity for me. And while none of the pictures are technically perfect, they’re perfect to me. They capture the joy, love, and beautiful chaos of our family just as we are.
This holiday season, I’m grateful for the reminder to let go of expectations and embrace the magic of imperfection. A beautiful reminder for us all. Merry Christmas from my family to yours!
